Home » How To Know If You Need A New Boiler

Boiler faults can be costly and also dangerous yet they’re not always easy to notice. We’ve listed some warning signs that may indicate you need a new one.

Radiators take longer to heat up

Most modern boilers can reach their maximum temperature and produce heat quite quickly. If your radiators stay warm or take hours to get hot, this could mean that your boiler is on its way out. Or, this could mean your central heating system is full of debris or sludge which causes it to not function properly. A giveaway sign is if radiators are warm at the top but not the bottom. The debris can mean that this area is preventing the radiator from heating properly. It may be that your boiler needs Power-flushing. If your whole home takes a while to heat up it may be time for a boiler service or full replacement.

Your boiler is giving off a bad smell

A healthy boiler should never create a smell. If you detect an egg-like smell coming from your boiler, give us a call straight away. This smell could be due to poor flue or burner performance but the likely culprit could be a gas leak. Although Carbon Monoxide is odourless, a smell could be present because the leak is causing the boiler to not burn correctly. Carbon monoxide can be potentially fatal. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of consciousness

Keep an eye out for other warning signs:

  • Pilot light frequently blows out
  • Flames of a yellow colour in the boiler, instead of a crisp blue flame
  • Sooty stains around the boiler
  • Heavy condensation inside windows in the room where the boiler is installed

Your energy bills are increasing

If your energy bills are rapidly increasing it could be down to an inefficient boiler. As a heating system ages it can cost more to run due to losing efficiency. An easy way to check efficiency is to look at its efficiency rating. By law, all boilers must have one of these ratings. A is the most efficient grade and G is the least efficient. Boilers are often rated differently for their heating and hot water performance. Modern boilers should have a good efficiency rating. If you have an old model it may be that it has a poor efficiency rating and you could potentially be paying much more than you need to.

Your boiler is leaking

If your gas boiler is leaking it could be a serious problem. You should not attempt to repair it yourself and should take immediate action. The leak can lead to rust and corrosion or can cause electric components to short circuit and could cause problems around the house including structural damage.

Your boiler is making a lot of noises

All boilers make a slight noise when firing up. If you hear banging sounds it’s important that you take notice. These banging sounds are not what you want to be hearing and could indicate a number of issues such as gurgling or rumbling. A rumbling noise coming from your boiler is a sign that it is kettling, this is a serious issue that’s caused by a build-up of mineral deposits on the inside of a boiler’s heat exchanger. A gurgling sound in the pipes is caused by air bubbles in the pipes, which impede the flow of water and lessen the system’s ability to heat. If you experience these sounds, switch of the boiler and give us a call straight away. It’s important that we make sure your boiler is safe to use and this could be a minor problem that can be easily fixed.
